Let's face it - our inner voice can be a real jerk sometimes. I, for one, know this struggle all too well. Despite my efforts to stay positive, negativity can creep in and take hold.
Recently, I encountered two situations that triggered my inner critic:
Scenario 1: The Jobless Jitters:
After leaving my job, my mind went into overdrive, conjuring up worst-case scenarios. Dreams of homelessness haunted me, while my phone mysteriously started bombarding me with videos about it. Without an income and losing my apartment, my brain convinced itself this was my impending reality. Thankfully, I landed back on my feet with my parents for a while, but the fear still lingers occasionally.
Scenario 2: Client Content Catastrophe:
A client unexpectedly removed social media content I'd created, and silence reigned. My mind spiraled, riddled with doubts about my skills. Was I not good enough? Was I about to be fired? These thoughts ran rampant despite the complete lack of communication. (Turns out, the promotion period simply ended, and the posts were related to that campaign.)
Breaking the Cycle:
So, how do I combat these negativity spirals? Instead of dwelling on "what ifs," I focus on calming the storm within.
My Top Techniques:
Breathwork: Focusing on my breath creates a space for composure and rational thinking.
Fact vs. Fiction: I remind myself that I don't have a crystal ball. Unless something is factually proven, I choose to believe in myself and my abilities.
Positive Reinforcement: Panic can be paralyzing. I counter it with self-assurance. I remind myself that I've overcome challenges before, and I can handle whatever comes my way.
We're All in This Together:
Self-doubt is a universal experience. The key is recognizing it, actively challenging it, and fostering a more positive mindset.
