Here, I'll be diving deep into the world of Estonian fashion design, exploring its current state and igniting discussions about its exciting future.
Having recently returned to Estonia, I felt a burning desire to contribute. Before I take flight again, I want to tackle a question that's been simmering in my mind for a while: how can we elevate Estonian fashion design onto the global stage?
My vision is ambitious, but let's start by addressing the elephant in the room.
Estonia is undeniably small. Sadly, on the world map, we often get overlooked. Yet, during my time abroad (since 2019!), it struck me how much potential remains untapped here. The world is vast, boasting a population of 8 billion, compared to our modest 1.3 million.
While living and studying in the UK, I witnessed a stark contrast in mindsets. There, a positive, growth-oriented approach permeated the culture. Here in Estonia, a tendency exists to focus solely on the local market, often perceiving the global stage as daunting and unreachable. Perhaps it's a historical or cultural influence, but I believe we can shift this perspective.
Having had the privilege of living abroad, I experienced firsthand the boundless possibilities that the world offers. Now, I'm determined to share this knowledge and empower others to seize similar opportunities.
A recent conversation with Estonian fashion graduates deeply troubled me. Many felt not equipped to sell their creations – a fundamental skill blatantly missing from their education. This is unacceptable!
How can we reconcile this with a system that leaves artists struggling financially throughout their lives, often achieving recognition only after death?
Let's not dwell on the negatives. I aim to explore solutions for Estonian fashion in the digital age.
Through this blog series, my personal Instagram account, and – hopefully soon – even larger platforms, I'll be shining a light on Estonian fashion talent. We'll explore established designers alongside the up-and-coming stars of the industry.
Estonia, with its breathtaking Nordic beauty, rich culture, and incredible people, possesses immense potential to become a world-renowned destination.
Nordic Spark is my contribution to igniting that spark and illuminating Estonian fashion on the global stage.
